Cannes festival may lose electricity

Energy union in France has threatened to cut off electricity to the Cannes Film Festival.

Energy union in France has threatened to cut off electricity to the Cannes Film Festival.

In a bold move, the CGT Energy union in France announced Friday the launch of "100 days of action and anger," with the threat of cutting off electricity to the prestigious film fest.

The National Federation Mines Energy (FNME) issued a statement after a general council held on Friday, declaring that they will continue with "energy disturbances" during scheduled trips of French President Emmanuel Macron.

The group warned that major events in May, including the Cannes Film Festival, could be plunged into darkness, and vowed not to back down until their demands were met.

The decision to use electricity cutoffs is seen as a last resort, used to "win on all our demands," according to the FNME.

The CGT claimed Thursday that two power cuts occurred at Montpellier airport and a college in Hérault during a trip by Macron.

Since January, France has witnessed widespread protests, triggered by a new law to increase the retirement age.

The reforms were officially signed into law by President Macron, which in turn fueled public anger resulting in more demonstrations.
